On Thursday May 22 2025, Church Crookham and Fleet Garden Society members and guests welcomed David Standing to talk about Gilbert White the Gardener. The talk took place at the WI Hall Crookham Village.
David (now retired) spoke about his experiences as head gardener at Gilbert White’s house in Selborne, Hampshire.
David originally took a temporary job at the gardens which subsequently lasted 38 yrs until his retirement. He led us through his fascination with Gilbert White’s diaries, entries logged from as early as 1751. Notes recorded weather conditions, planting and the success of different crops. Over time White recorded the timings of migrating birds & the arrival of the first snowdrops. David was able to use the extensive archives to recreate & reinstate much of the original garden features which had been lost during consecutive ownership & alterations to the house.
David brought along a lovely selection of cottage garden plants for sale that he had grown from seed, each chosen for colour, perfume, and ability to attract insects. We are all looking forward to purchases flourishing in our gardens.

A lovely email from one of our members sums up the evening “The talk on Gilbert White was absolutely fascinating – inspiring to learn more about his observations, his deep connection to nature, and the legacy of his work. The speaker brought White’s works to life in such a vivid and engaging way – thank you David”.

A great talk, super catering and a raffle supporting the society. A great night was had by all; commented committee member Caroline Morris.
